Last post we talked about the one of the three organizing principles of Polyvagal Theory, Neuroception. Today we are going to talk about the third organizing principle: Co-regulation.
Psychological research has found that relationships are very important. In fact, they are a biological imperative- we need relationships to survive. Polyvagal Theory helps to show us why this is. We are not just communicating brain to brain, but also nervous system to nervous system. Co-regulation is the way the nervous system from one person influences the nervous system of another. It is the reciprocal sending and receiving of signals of safety. It is not just the absence of danger, but connection between two nervous systems.
Think of a recent time when you were stressed, anxious, or angry. What did you do? Did you call a friend or family member to vent? If you did, how did you feel afterwards? Likely the person listened to you, allowed you to vent, and helped calm you down- that's co-regulation.
Next post we will start delving into strategies to help understand, befriend, and regulate your nervous system. Stay tuned!
