Hi everyone. We left off in our Polyvagal series talking about breathwork. Today we are going to talk about mindfulness.
In our fast-paced world, stress and anxiety are common challenges many of us face. Fortunately, combining our understanding of the nervous system from Polyvagal theory and mindfulness offers powerful tools to help us manage stressors and feel better. Let's dive in!
What is mindfulness? Mindfulness involves paying attention to the present moment with openness, and non-judgment. It has been shown to reduce stress, enhance our ability to manage our emotions and improve our overall well-being. Combining mindfulness with Polyvagal Theory insights, we can create powerful practices that help regulate our nervous system and promote a sense of safety and calm.
One practice is Body Scan Meditation. How to do it: find a quiet place to sit or lie down comfortably. Close your eyes and take a few deep breaths. Slowly bring your attention to different parts of your body, starting from your toes and moving up to the top of your head. Notice any sensations without judgment. Try to spend 5-10 minutes on this practice. Check in with yourself afterward.
Next week I will return with another mindfulness practice. Stay tuned, and thanks for reading! --Dr. T
